The results of state examinations in the health sector are considered catastrophic: only 0.70% of midwife candidates, 4.58% of state nurses and 7.15% of nursing assistants were admitted to the practical phase, reports Les Echos.
Faced with this situation, the same source points out, two organizations in the sector, the National Association of State-certified Nursing Assistants of Senegal (Anaides) and the National Union of Private Health Schools (Uneps), are sounding the alarm and calling for urgent reform.
For Anaides, these results confirm a "recurring trend for nearly a decade." The association describes this situation as a "systemic crisis" that jeopardizes the future of an entire generation of healthcare professionals.
For its part, UNEPS says it is "deeply concerned" by these "incomprehensible" figures. It rejects the idea that these results reflect a failure in training, defending the quality of the teaching provided in its establishments.
The competency-based approach (CBA) in question
Both organizations point the finger at the Competency-Based Approach (CBA), the current assessment system. They believe that an assessment system with such a low success rate should be questioned. UNEPS, in particular, criticizes the application of a 10/20 elimination mark, which it considers contrary to the spirit of the CBA.
Faced with this crisis, Anaides and Uneps are calling on the authorities to hold a "national dialogue" and an "interministerial council" to thoroughly reform the evaluation system and save the health training sector.
