Côte d'Ivoire: plusieurs cadres de l'opposition longuement entendus par la police

Several officials from two opposition parties in Côte d'Ivoire, including a member of parliament, were questioned at length by police on Tuesday before being released early Wednesday morning, regarding incidents that occurred last weekend in Abidjan, according to one of their lawyers and one of the parties.

The political climate is tense in Ivory Coast ahead of the October 25 presidential election: opposition figures have been barred from the vote by court decisions and several opposition activists have been arrested in recent weeks.

On Tuesday morning, Yohou Dia Houphouët, a member of parliament for the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI), Damana Pickass, and four other officials from the two parties were summoned to the Abidjan police headquarters.

The summons invited them to "be available in the context of the procedures concerning the recent events in Yopougon," the PDCI stated in a press release.

"Then the prosecutor gave instructions that the Territorial Surveillance Directorate (DST) should interview them," Sylvain Tapi, lawyer for the PPA-CI executives, told AFP, denouncing the "abnormally long" hearings. The six men left the police headquarters free early Wednesday morning.

On the night of Friday to Saturday, a public transport bus was set on fire and a police car was damaged by individuals armed with machetes, clubs, firearms and incendiary cocktails, according to the public prosecutor, Oumar Braman Koné.

Eleven people were arrested, including members of the PPA-CI who denied any involvement in the violence.

Contacted by AFP on Wednesday, prosecutor Koné declined to comment on an ongoing case.

"The most important thing is that we remain focused on our objective: the march on Saturday, August 9, 2025. We are counting on you to ensure a peaceful march," declared MP Dia Houphouët, as he left the prefecture.

The PDCI and the PPA-CI, whose two candidates, Tidjane Thiam and former President Laurent Gbagbo, are excluded from the presidential election by court decisions, have come together in a "Common Front" and called for a march on Saturday in the commune of Yopougon to demand dialogue with the government with a view to inclusive elections.

President Alassane Ouattara, in power since 2011, announced at the end of July that he would seek a fourth term as president.
