Mame Cheikh Anta Mbacké: L'argentier du mouridisme !

Mame Cheikh Anta, whose real name is Sidy Moukhtar Mbacké, is distinguished not only by his spiritual closeness, but also by his blood relationship with the founder of Mouridism, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. Son of Mame Mor Anta Saly and Anta Ndiaye, he was born in 1866 in Prokhane. Cheikh Anta is a younger brother of Serigne Touba,

At a very young age, at the age of three, he was entrusted to Serigne Touba by their father. He grew up in the protective shadow of his illustrious brother, of whom he would become one of the first disciples, but above all the very first to be elevated to the rank of Sheikh, which earned him one of his most famous nicknames: Sheikh Anta, or more affectionately, the Sheikh son of Anta.

At the age of six, when he was sent to the Koranic school in Rufisque to continue his studies, he made a significant choice: to return to his brother, refusing to remain distant from him. This gesture, revealing a deep and unconditional love for Serigne Touba, would mark his entire career.

Recognizing this loyalty, Serigne Touba offered him the village of Darou Salam, of which he became the spiritual guide and main developer. He established a vibrant community there, making this space a major religious center. Later, in 1905, he founded the village of Gawane, which earned him the nicknames Borom Darou Salam and Borom Gawane.

The Sheikh's treasurer, a man of mission and trust, he made the pilgrimage to Mecca in 1928, on the direct instructions of Serigne Touba before his death, thus carrying the Mouride message to the holy places of Islam. His commitment did not stop there. Following the election of Blaise Diagne, and in a context of tensions between the colonial authorities and religious figures, he was deported to Mali in 1930. An ordeal he endured with remarkable patience. He would not return to Senegal until 1935, before passing away in December 1940, at the age of 74.

Oustaz Mame Balla Guèye, teacher and preacher at the Darou Salam mosque, retraces the life of this man, who is not only a brother of Serigne Touba, but a model of fidelity, sacrifice and service for the work of his spiritual guide.
