Les douanes françaises saisissent plus de 5.600 bijoux fantaisie dangereux venant de Chine

More than 5,600 items of costume jewelry were seized by French customs officials on August 6 due to excessive heavy metal content, customs announced Wednesday.

These batches of jewelry from China, "popular with children and adolescents," posed a danger to consumer health due to "non-compliance" with European regulations applicable to chemical substances, they stated in a press release.

Laboratory analyses of samples taken by customs services revealed, "for two types of jewelry", "a nickel content more than 4 times higher and a lead content 3 times higher than the authorized standards".

All seized goods "will be destroyed by incineration," customs said.

The European regulation known as "REACH" authorizes the placing on the market of jewelry items made from base metals that contain substances such as lead, nickel or cadmium, but at extremely low levels and without danger to health.
