[ C H R O N I Q U E ] - Les incuries d’Augias

Bassist Cheikh Ndoye   - WebNews
Watch out for this young bassist. He's just breaking onto the scene with his first solo CD featuring such luminaries as Russell Ferrante and Eric Marienthall, and fitting in like a glove with these jazz icons. Known as a "Richard Bona protégé", (quite a statement to uphold) he shows on this first effort to have tremendous potential in quite a few directions. Being an accomplished composer as well as a player, he represents yet another generation of young lions to be reckoned with. With a surprisingly defined maturity to his playing, coupled with his great sense of melody, Cheikh will become a familiar voice on the scene sooner than later.

Falou Dieng At Joe's Pub New York, August, 2007   - WebNews
In 1999, the Stern’s label released one of the decade’s most intriguing African albums, Streets of Dakar, Generation Boul Falé, which showcased several of Senegal’s most promising new stars. One of the album’s most outstanding tracks, “Koleuré,” introduced for the first time to the outside world the great voice of Fallou Dieng,

In Dense Stews From Senegal, Intriguing Secrets   - WebNews
WITH its spotless new white-tile floors and gleaming stainless-steel ovens, the basement kitchen of Patisserie des Ambassades, a French cafe in Harlem on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, has the fit and finish of a laboratory. On a recent weekday morning, its two resident scientists — bakers in starched white coats — glazed mixed-berry tartlets and spread crème Chantilly over thin sheets of millefeuille pastry on a long steel table. But at the table’s opposite end was the kitchen’s resident artist, Ken Alice N’doye, preparing thiebu djen (cheb-oo JEN), Senegal’s national dish of rice cooked in a tomato-based fish stew. Although Ms. N’doye, 31, an owner of the cafe, also wore a crisp chef’s coat, her every move sprung from sensual, rather than technical, cues.

Narcotics: Senegal Unravels Cocaine Network   - WebNews
Dakar - Senegalese police are unravelling a Latin American drug smuggling network thought to be using the west African nation as a hub for trafficking to Europe and the United States after seizing cocaine worth over $200-million (about R1,1-billion).Police have discovered 2 454kg of cocaine and arrested three South American men since a deserted sailing ship, apparently broken down, drifted into a popular coastal resort last Wednesday with 50 sacks of the drug on board.

MUMBAI: Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM) has extended a line of credit of USD 10 million to Senegal, under the Team-9 initiative. Team-9 envisages a special cooperation model between India and eight countries of West Africa where the Centre, through Exim Bank, provides loans to the African nations, a release issued stated. Under the letter of credit to Senegal, Exim Bank would reimburse 100 per cent of contract value to the Indian exporters upfront, upon the shipment of goods.

Senegal: Dakar Charged Over Delay In Habré's Trial   - WebNews
Senegal's government is accused of blocking the lawsuit introduced before Dakar courts by victims who suffered torture under the rule of former Chadian President Hissen Habré. In an interview with the French newspaper Libération, counsel Jacqueline Moudeina, president of the Chadian Association for the Promotion and the Defense of Human rights (ATPDH), revealed that Dakar claimed about "66 million euros to the African Union (AU) and the international community as monies to be used for the construction of a new court building in Dakar and payment for the judges who would try Hissen Habré» in what is yet seen as an hypothetical lawsuit.

African Twig Brushes Offer All-day Dental Care   - WebNews
PhotoBrush your teeth every day, dentists say. In Africa, that can mean keeping your toothbrush in your mouth all day long. Across the continent south of the Sahara, many people go about their daily business with a small stick or twig protruding from their mouth, which they chew or use to scrub their teeth. Cut from wild trees and shrubs in the bush, this is the African toothbrush. Its users swear it is much more natural, effective -- and cheaper -- than the prettily packaged but pricey dental products on sale in pharmacies and supermarkets.

In Secret, Polygamy Follows Africans To N.y.   - WebNews
She worked at the Red Lobster in Times Square and lived with her husband near Yankee Stadium. Yet one night, returning home from her job, Odine D. discovered that African custom, not American law, held sway over her marriage. A strange woman was sitting in the living room, and Ms. D.’s husband, a security guard born in Ghana, introduced her as his other wife. Devastated, Ms. D., a Guinean immigrant who insisted that her last name be withheld, said she protested: “I can’t live with the woman in my house — we have only two bedrooms.” Her husband cited Islamic precepts allowing a man to have up to four wives, and told her to get used to it. And she tried to obey.

Senegalese Leader's Programs Under Fire   - WebNews
DAKAR, Senegal - The seaside highway, one of the Senegalese president's bold building initiatives, winds past the scruffy shop where a 62-year-old tailor and his two sons eke out a living sewing scraps of cloth into curtains. It's a beautiful highway — no doubt about it, says Barry Mamadou. "But I can't eat the road," he says, explaining why, having twice voted for President Abdoulaye Wade, he is now siding with one of 14 opposition candidates in Sunday's presidential election. The 80-year-old president's projects range from the new sea-hugging highway to a second airport and a pan-African university.

Robert Sagna Laments Politics In Armed Forces   - WebNews
The vote of the security forces in the presidential election in Senegal did not go down well with Robert Sagna, the candidate of "Takkou Defaraat Sénégal" in the February 25 presidential polls. According to Mr Sagna, the vote of the security forces could be a way of politicising the Armed forces. He made those comments at a political rally on Monday in Thies. " Considering the vote of the soldiers, the professionalism of the Senegalese Army Forces based on good attitude and discipline, could lead to their involvement in politics and the politicising of our army forces," he said.

Student Protesters Burn Tyres Ahead Of Senegal Vote   - WebNews
DAKAR, Feb 19 (Reuters) - University students blocked a main avenue in the Senegalese capital with boulders and burning tyres on Monday to protest at what they say is neglect by the government, days ahead of presidential elections. President Abdoulaye Wade is widely expected to win a second mandate in the former French colony, the only country in West Africa not to have experienced a coup since independence, but where discontent among the country's youth is running high. Wade, who is in his 80s, swept to power in 2000 promising jobs and investment in education.

Senegalese Men Rescued Trying To Sail To New York   - WebNews
03 February 2007- Fourteen men who were trying to journey by a British-registered catamaran from Senegal in west Africa to New York, where they dreamed of finding jobs and new lives, have been rescued from an Atlantic storm after drifting for days with broken sails and a stalled engine. US Coast Guard officials said the men set out on their voyage on the 50ft yacht, called L'Onde Marine (Ocean Wave) on 12 December. They had been drifting without power or sails for days when the boat was spotted last Sunday by a merchant container ship listing badly in 30ft waves.

Senegal Police Crush Opposition Election Protest   - WebNews
DAKAR, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Senegalese riot police beat opposition leaders with batons and fired tear gas at a crowd of protestors demonstrating against President Abdoulaye Wade ahead of presidential elections next month. A group of around 50 police baton-charged protestors and arrested at least six leaders of opposition parties at the march to demand free and fair polls in the West African state. The demonstration had been banned on Friday by authorities in Senegal, where the Feb. 25 election has raised tensions in a country regarded as a democratic bastion in a region infamous for civil wars and military coups. Wade, 80, remains favourite to retain power at next month's polls.

Suspect Admits Senegal Official's Killing   - WebNews
Senegalese police have almost reached to the bottom of the last weekend's high profile assassination of Oumar Lamine Badji in the troubled region of Casamance after a suspect, Abba Diedhiou, confessed to be among those who carried out the act. So far three suspects have been arrested but it is believed that several others will join them, as the police intensify their investigations. Thursday's breakthrough came after the police questioned the President of the Local Council in Sindian, a witness of the incident and a cousin to the deceased. This gave the police the clue, ending up in the arrest of three suspects, including Abba Diedhiou, who is a member of the Local Council of Tandine, a few kilometres from Sindian.
