États-Unis : mis sous pression par Donald Trump, un procureur fédéral démissionne

A federal prosecutor who refused to prosecute Donald Trump's opponents resigned Friday. Earlier, the US president had called for his resignation.

A federal prosecutor who refused to prosecute Donald Trump's opponents resigned Friday, according to US media reports.

A few hours earlier, the American president had publicly called for his departure. "I want him gone," the Republican billionaire declared, in response to a journalist who asked him in the Oval Office if he wanted the dismissal of the federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert. The latter submitted his resignation Friday evening, several media outlets reported.

Erik Siebert recently ruled there was insufficient evidence to bring fraud charges against New York State Attorney General Letitia James, according to the Washington Post.

Heavy fine

A fierce opponent of Donald Trump, Letitia James had the president fined nearly half a billion dollars before his return to the White House.

The fraud conviction was ultimately overturned in late August by a New York State appeals court, which ruled the fine was "excessive." The prosecutor announced her intention to appeal the decision.

According to US media reports, Erik Siebert also refused to prosecute another of Donald Trump's foes, former FBI Director James Comey. Abruptly fired in 2017 while investigating possible Russian interference in Donald Trump's campaign, Comey is accused by Trump of lying to Congress.
