The vessel intercepted 426 km from the Azores was carrying 300 shipments of drugs from Latin America.
A record seizure. Portuguese authorities announced they had seized "approximately nine tons" of cocaine on board a "semi-submersible" vessel intercepted off the Azores archipelago coming from Latin America, with three Colombians and one Venezuelan on board.
"This is the largest cocaine seizure ever made in Portugal," a spokeswoman for the judicial police said on Monday.
Difficult weather conditions
The police indicated that they had intercepted this vessel "in recent days" about 230 nautical miles from the Azores (approximately 426 km) with the help of the navy and air force, and the collaboration of American and British authorities.
The operation took place in difficult weather conditions and the submarine eventually sank with 35 of the 300 drug shipments it was carrying, police said.
Latin America is the world's main source of cocaine. The cultivation of the coca leaf, essential for the production of this drug, is mainly concentrated in three countries — Bolivia, Colombia and Peru — while trafficking networks operate internationally.
