Avec "zéro" droit de douane, la Chine ouvre ses portes à l'Afrique

Since May 1st, China has eliminated all customs duties on products from 53 African countries, a measure that will last two years.

The only exception is Eswatini, an ally of Taiwan, which remains outside the agreement. Since December 2024, 33 of Africa's least developed countries have already benefited from this exemption. But today, China is extending the scheme to 20 additional countries – without asking for anything in return. African countries will not have to lower their own tariffs on Chinese goods. For Beijing, this is an opportunity to secure a market experiencing rapid population growth and to sell its manufactured products. For Africa, it's a boost for its exports.

China, Africa's leading trading partner, is taking a long-term view. And the figures bear this out: trade is booming, reaching a new all-time high of $300 billion in 2025. Is this calculated generosity or economic control? One thing is certain: with this decision, Beijing is further strengthening its influence on the continent.
