Après la Daf : SENUM SA, gardienne des données de l'État, piratée
In Senegal, the issuance of national identity cards has been officially suspended following a cyberattack targeting the Directorate of File Automation (DAF). L'Observateur describes this incident as merely "the tip of the iceberg" in its edition of Friday, February 6.
A massive data breach
The attack was claimed by the hacker group The Green Blood Group, which asserts it possesses 139 terabytes of sensitive data from the DAF (Directorate of Administration and Finance). Even more worrying, warns the daily newspaper of the Futurs Médias Group, the company Sénégal Numérique SA (SENUM SA), responsible for the government's computerization and created at the end of 2021 to succeed ADIE (Agency for the Development of Information Technology), was also compromised. The simultaneous nature of these attacks raises fears of a coordinated offensive targeting the country's most strategic digital infrastructure.
The Malaysian connection is being investigated.
Investigators from the Special Cyber Division (DSC) are exploring a complex lead involving the Malaysian service provider Iris Corporation. This digital identity specialist was awarded a massive 50 billion CFA franc contract in 2016 to produce 10 million identity cards. The compromise of these two pillars of the administration, according to initial findings, suggests a "systematic exploitation of security vulnerabilities at the highest levels of the state."
Securing the Republic's "vaults"
A thorough technical investigation is being conducted by Commissioner Pape Djidiack Faye's office. The objective is twofold: to determine the true extent of the data exfiltration and to plug the gaps in order to secure the infrastructure and prevent the recurrence of such a catastrophic scenario, according to the same source.
