Crise universitaire à Saint-Louis : l’année académique maintenue malgré la grève, des sanctions envisagées
Gaston Berger University (UGB) in Saint-Louis is going through a period of high tension. Meeting in ordinary session on March 24, 2026, the institution's Academic Council made important decisions in response to the ongoing student strike, which has been disrupting the normal course of academic activities for several weeks.
In a resolution published on March 25, 2026, the Academic Council expressed its "deep concern" regarding the delays in teaching and assessments. Despite this challenging situation, the Council reassured the university community: the deadline of August 14, 2026, remains in place for the end of the 2025-2026 academic year.
A possible invalidation of the year or semester in August
However, this decision comes with a warning. The Academic Council plans to meet again in August to assess the overall situation. At that time, it does not rule out invalidating the academic year or a semester, depending on the proposals that will be formulated by the various UFRs (Training and Research Units) and by the Saint-Louis Polytechnic Institute (IPSL).
This possibility reflects the seriousness of the current crisis and the uncertainties surrounding the academic calendar.
Disciplinary proceedings are being considered.
In a firmer tone, the Academic Council calls on the Rector, Magatte Ndiaye, to take disciplinary action against the students identified as having disrupted classes and assessments. These actions, the statement emphasizes, violate Law 94-79 of November 24, 1994, concerning academic freedoms and liberties.
The students concerned could therefore be brought before the Disciplinary Board as soon as possible.
The CESL is still not recognized
Another important point raised in the resolution is the non-recognition of the Saint-Louis Student Coordination (CESL). Suspended since 2019, this organization lacks any administrative or legal legitimacy in the eyes of the university authorities.
The Academic Council insists that only legally elected representatives within the UFRs and the IPSL are authorized to engage in dialogue with university and state authorities.
A crisis with multiple implications
This latest statement from the Academic Council comes amid a tense social climate, marked by recurring student demands and disruptions to the academic calendar.
Between a desire to maintain institutional direction and a firm stance in the face of disruptions, UGB seems to be engaged in a strategy aimed at restoring academic order while safeguarding the credibility of its training system.
It remains to be seen whether these measures will be sufficient to calm the situation and allow a return to normal activities in the coming weeks.
