UGB – Intrusion violente lors d’un examen : le SAES décrète une grève de 72 heures

Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis was shaken by a serious incident that occurred on August 4, 2025, during resit exams held at the Polytechnic Institute of Saint-Louis (IPSL). According to a press release published by the local branch of the Autonomous Union of Higher Education (SAES-UGB), individuals claiming to be members of the Coordination of Students of Saint-Louis (CESL) burst into an exam room, violently disrupting the smooth running of the exams.

The exams in Fluid Mechanics and Automation were abruptly interrupted. The intruders seized the exam papers, candidates' papers, and their rough drafts, causing chaos within the institution. The SAES-UGB describes these acts as "extremely serious," believing that they undermine the fundamental principles of university life.

In its press release, the union reiterates that this intrusion clearly violates Article 20 of Law No. 94-79 of 24 November 1994 on academic freedoms and liberties. This text guarantees every student the right to freely and fully pursue their educational activities and prohibits any form of violence, threats, or disruption to the normal functioning of the institution.

Faced with what it considers an unacceptable escalation, the SAES-UGB has decided to declare a 72-hour strike starting Tuesday, August 5, 2025. This strike includes the suspension of all teaching and administrative activities on the UGB campus.

The union is making the lifting of this order conditional on two urgent measures:

1. The formal identification of all those responsible for the intrusion, some of whom have already been identified, and the immediate initiation of disciplinary and legal proceedings against them.

2. A firm commitment from university authorities to the effective protection of academic freedoms and liberties on campus.

The SAES-UGB also called on the authorities to fully assume their responsibilities regarding security, stressing that the protection of teachers, students, and administrative staff must be a top priority. A clear response is pending.
