The 9th edition of the Ziarra (pilgrimage) in 2025, dedicated to the founder of the Aïnou Salam community in Sindian, Bignona department, has taken place. It was marked by the presence of administrative and local authorities, as well as representatives from various ministries and state program leaders.
The life and work of Sheikh Ousmane Sountou Badji, founder of the Aïnou Salam community, were reviewed during the official ceremony, as was the presentation of the project to modernize the religious city.
In front of their guests, the twin caliphs, heirs to the work of Sheikh Ousmane Sountou Badji, reiterated their call for peace for Senegal, neighboring countries, and throughout the world. "The pursuit of peace is our ideal and remains our approach," they declared.
Access to the water at Sindian, the Fogny loop and the Émile Badiane bridge
In their address, Abdoul Hassan and Abdoul Hassein Badji commended the work undertaken by the Minister of Water and Sanitation to resolve the water problem in Sindian, particularly the well which had experienced difficulties prior to the Ziarra pilgrimage. "We witnessed the commitment of the Minister of Water, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, when the people of Sindian faced a water shortage in recent days. However, we ask and urge him to help us resolve this water problem in the town itself," and in the more remote areas, such as the palm groves, Kalounayes, and Blouf.
The caliphs also expressed their hope that the Fogny loop would finally be completed up to the palm grove area, while inviting the population to remain more calm regarding this issue.
Regarding the Émilie Badiane bridge in Ziguinchor, the twin caliphs call for calm: "All those who speak about this bridge do not know the warranty date. We ask the government to help us rebuild it, because the day it collapses, the whole of Casamance will collapse."
The life and work of Sheikh Ousmane Sountou Badji revisited
The various speakers revisited the work of Sheikh Ousmane Sountou Badji, founder of the Aïnou Salam community of Sindian. His attachment to Islam, to peace, to cohesion between peoples and ethnicities, as well as his commitment to living together between Muslims and Christians, occupied the bulk of the testimonies.
In this regard to the Christian-Muslim dialogue, people recalled his trip to Rome in 1969 to meet Pope Paul VI. Sountou Badji was one of the first Muslim religious leaders from Senegal to go to the Vatican where, on July 16, 1969, he presented a copy of the Quran to the Holy Father.
The twin caliphs also urged the authorities to consider youth employment. "Ensuring jobs for young people is what can save them," they said, and it is the responsibility of all religious leaders and abbots to champion this cause so that young people can find work and opportunities.
Abdoul Hassein and Abdoul Hassan finally offered prayers for peace in Senegal and for good cohesion at the top of the state.
