Bassin du fleuve Gambie : des niveaux d’eau en forte hausse à Kédougou, la cote d’alerte dépassée

The hydrological situation of the Gambia River and its tributaries, monitored this Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 8 a.m. by the services of the Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade, reveals a contrasting trend depending on the station. Some areas are recording a significant rise in water levels, while others are experiencing a slight decrease.

Tributaries on the rise overall

Diaguiri (upstream of Mako): the level reached 5.54 m compared to 4.96 m yesterday, an increase of 58 cm. At the same time in 2024, it was only 4.47 m.

Afia Bridge (Thiokoye): the river rises to 5.72 m compared to 5.13 m the day before, i.e. +59 cm. This level is significantly higher than the 2.79 m observed on the same date in 2024.

Diahra Pont: significant drop, with 2.56 m this morning against 3.23 m yesterday, or -67 cm.

. Goumbayel: recorded height of 1.51 m, with no data available for the previous day.

Niokolo Koba: very slight drop, 5.84 m against 5.87 m yesterday (-3 cm). But the level remains well below last year's 8.29 m.

. Sinthiou Malème: the water level no longer reaches the scale.

The Gambia River crosses the alert level at Kédougou

The situation is more worrying in Kédougou, where the water level measured this morning is 7.94 m, an increase of 44 cm compared to the previous day (7.50 m).

The alert level set at 7 m has been exceeded by 94 cm, exposing local residents to flooding risks. Last year, at the same time, the level was only 5.55 m.

At Mako, the river is at 5.37 m, compared to 5.05 m yesterday, or +32 cm. This level remains below the alert level (6 m), but already exceeds the 4.85 m observed in 2024.

In Simenti, this morning's data are not yet available. Yesterday, the height was 9.75 m, down from 11.91 m recorded at the same time last year. The alert level for this station is set at 13 m.

Finally, in Gouloumbou, the water level continues to rise, reaching 8.83 m compared to 8.64 m yesterday, or +19 cm. The level remains below the alert level of 12 m, but lower than the 9.78 m reached in September 2024.

Caution recommended

These data confirm an intensification of the flooding of the Gambia River, particularly in the Kédougou area, where the exceeding of the alert level should encourage the authorities and the population to be vigilant. Hydrological services will continue their daily monitoring to anticipate any risk of flooding.
