Finale CAN 2025 : une tension déplacée sur le terrain politique ?
The CAF's decision to award the AFCON to Morocco by default, to the detriment of Senegal who were the winners on the field, could now go beyond the sporting realm and interfere with preparations for a major diplomatic summit between France and Africa.
The controversy is not subsiding. Nearly ten days after the decision of the appeals jury of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which awarded the continental title to Morocco on March 17 by overturning the result of the final (Senegal had nevertheless won 1-0 after extra time), the shockwaves are spreading far beyond the football pitches.
The dispute is now having concrete diplomatic repercussions on preparations for the "Africa Forward" summit, co-organized by France and Kenya on May 11 and 12 in Nairobi. The agenda for this high-level meeting, which President Emmanuel Macron is expected to attend alongside numerous African heads of state and government, includes development financing, peace and security, creative and cultural industries, and sports, particularly during the opening day on May 11, according to a statement from the Élysée Palace.
Is Morocco ready to boycott?
But the situation is becoming tense behind the scenes. According to an African source speaking to L'Équipe, Morocco has reportedly questioned its participation in the summit if Senegal is also present. However, at this stage, the Senegalese delegation is expected in Nairobi.
When questioned on this point, Emmanuel Macron's entourage indicated that there was "no impact expected on participation in the summit", without further details on a possible resolution of this remote dispute.
