Bassin du fleuve Gambie : le niveau d’eau poursuit sa baisse
The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its daily hydrological bulletin on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Readings taken at 8 a.m. at the main stations in the Gambia River basin indicate a general downward trend, despite some occasional variations.
At the Diaguiri station (upstream from Mako), the water level was measured at 4.64 m, a decrease of 9 cm compared to the previous day. At the same time last year, the level reached 5.20 m.
The situation is similar in Afia Pont (Thiokoye), where the water level has dropped to 4.26 m, a significant drop of 16 cm in 24 hours. In September 2024, it peaked at 6.27 m.
In Diahra Pont, the drop is even more marked: 1.57 m compared to 1.77 m the day before, or –20 cm.
The Niokolo Koba station also recorded a decline, with 5.78 m measured this morning, compared to 5.83 m on September 22, while it showed 8.56 m at the same time last year.
In Goumbayel and Sinthiou Malème, the water level is now too low to reach the measuring scale.
In Kédougou, the water level fell to 6.36 m, down 41 cm from the previous day. However, the level remains below the alert threshold of 7 meters. On the same date in 2024, the river was at 6.32 m.
In Simenti, no readings could be obtained this morning. The previous day, the water level was 10.60 m, down from the 11.95 m recorded in September 2024. The alert threshold there is 13 m.
On the Mako side, the river is at 5.14 m, compared to 5.30 m the day before, a drop of 16 cm. The alert level is set at 6 m.
The only exception to this downward trend is the Gouloumbou station, where the level has risen by 16 cm in 24 hours, reaching 9.38 m. However, it remains below the alert threshold set at 12 m and lower than that observed in 2024 (10.12 m).
These readings confirm the gradual decrease in water levels in the region, a phenomenon expected at the end of the winter season but which remains closely monitored by hydrological services, in particular to anticipate any risk of flooding.
