Cas de noyade : 28 décès de plus par rapport à l’année dernière (Colonel Diatta)

In an interview with APS, Colonel Papa Ange Michel Diatta, head of the employment chain at the headquarters of the National Fire Brigade (BNSP), reported a worrying increase in drowning cases in 2025 compared to the previous year.

"The first half of 2025 saw an increase of 28 deaths compared to the same period last year," said Colonel Diatta, highlighting the "early increase" in incidents this year.

"The data is clear: the number of firefighters called out has increased by 24, the number of victims by 37, and the most tragic figure, that of deaths, has jumped by 28 cases," he explained.

From January 1 to July 28, 2025, the BNSP carried out 88 rescue operations, rescuing 106 victims, 33 of whom were recovered alive.

Colonel Diatta noted that the average age of victims is 16, a particularly worrying figure. He also noted a "feminization of the number of victims," with nine women affected this year, compared to none the previous year.

The figures for July 2025 are particularly alarming: between July 1 and 28, the BNSP carried out 31 sorties for 34 victims, of which 18 were saved and 16 unfortunately died.

Colonel Diatta noted that the peak in drownings in Senegal coincides with the school holidays in July, August, and September. "The heat and students' free time largely explain this increase in accidents, prompting greater vigilance," he concluded.
