Gaz du Sénégal : l’APR accuse Ousmane Sonko de “travestir la vérité” et démonte ses déclarations
The Alliance for the Republic (APR) has spoken out to contest recent statements by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko regarding the management of gas resources and the country's economic situation. At a press conference, party officials denounced what they called "falsehoods" aimed at tarnishing the record of former President Macky Sall's regime.
From the outset, APR officials emphasized that Senegal possesses significant gas potential capable of permanently transforming its economy and strengthening its energy sovereignty. However, they insisted that this sovereignty cannot be built through "political rhetoric or proclamations detached from reality."
The APR reacted strongly to the Prime Minister's remarks regarding the Yakkar-Teranga gas project. According to the party, it is inaccurate to claim that the Senegalese state took over this project following renegotiation.
According to APR officials, the oil companies involved decided to withdraw due to a lack of partners to develop the project. The British major BP had already focused on developing the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, in which several billion dollars had been invested. Subsequently, Kosmos Energy also reportedly left the project after failing to find new partners.
"The bloc is simply becoming free again. There has been no renegotiation," party officials maintained.
According to them, the challenge for Senegal is now to attract a large oil group capable of investing around five billion dollars to develop the project, with a model combining supply to the national market and export of liquefied natural gas.
Controversy surrounding the cement industry
The APR also responded to the Prime Minister's criticisms of the cement sector. Party officials maintain that the benefits granted to companies in the sector simply resulted from the application of the mining code and the investment code, due to the strategic nature of this industry.
They recall that the year 2026 had been chosen as the deadline for the end of the mining regime applicable to cement manufacturers, in particular for the company Dangote Cement, in accordance with the provisions provided for after fifteen years of operation.
Regarding the GTA gas project, the APR emphasizes that it is a joint project between Senegal and Mauritania. Therefore, any decision concerning the unitization contract must be made jointly by the two partner states.
For party officials, a country's credibility in the oil and gas industry rests first and foremost on the stability of its rules and respect for its contractual commitments.
Beyond these sectoral issues, the APR has painted a critical picture of the current economic situation. According to the party, several indicators point to a decline in salaried employment and a weakening of the industrial fabric, particularly in manufacturing and services.
APR officials believe that the current political climate and tensions surrounding governance are contributing to an environment of uncertainty that could discourage investors.
"Every job lost weakens a family and every industry that disappears reduces the country's ability to create value," they said.
The APR therefore calls for governance focused on institutional stability, economic confidence and the sustainable development of the country's natural resources.
