26 Gambiens morts en Ukraine : La réaction de Banjul
An investigative report by the international organization INPACT reveals that at least 26 Gambians have been killed in the fighting in Ukraine. The report describes a systematic recruitment campaign targeting vulnerable young Africans with promises of high wages and citizenship.
At a recent press conference held in Banjul, Gambian Foreign Minister Serign Modou Njie stated that the government "was not informed of the recruitment" of these Gambians who died in Ukraine.
The Gambians killed in Ukraine had reportedly initially traveled abroad on visitor or student visas.
He believes that such private recruitment raises diplomatic and legal issues. He pledged to engage in discussions with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts to deter the recruitment and enlistment of Gambian citizens in the ongoing conflict.
The Gambians killed in Ukraine had initially travelled abroad on visitor or student visas before enlisting in foreign armies, Serign Modou Njie suggested.
He argued for an intensification of education campaigns in order to dissuade young people in particular, those without training or military experience, from enlisting in foreign armies.
