« Un garçon que j’aimais bien… » : Le patron des Forces armées béninoises parle du cerveau du putsch manqué
On Sunday, December 7th, Beninese President Patrice Talon narrowly escaped a coup attempt. The mastermind behind this failed putsch, Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri, remains at large. Approximately thirty soldiers suspected of involvement in this subversive undertaking are already in prison, awaiting trial.
Politicians, such as the famous opposition figure Candide Azannaï, are also being held in Beninese prisons following the events of Sunday, December 7.
"It's a disgrace. This shouldn't be happening."
The Chief of Staff of the Beninese Armed Forces, who was on a mission in France at the time of the events, recently gave an interview to Bip Radio. In the interview, he denounced this failed coup, which he likened to a disgrace.
“What happened to us is regrettable. Brothers in arms turned their weapons against the Republic, against their brothers in arms. It is a disgrace. It should not happen. We serve the Republic, we serve the Constitution, we have a duty to be loyal. When we are faced with such a situation, we can only deplore this betrayal,” declared Major General Fructueux Gbaguidi.
"I am disappointed"
He said he was genuinely disappointed to learn that Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri was in command of the subservient operations.
"This comrade who took up arms against the country, he was a boy I liked, a boy I almost coached. I am disappointed. I pray for him wherever he is because he committed very serious acts," the general added.
