In exile in Equatorial Guinea since 2017, former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh has announced his return to Banjul next month. This news has caused quite a stir in the country, even at the highest levels of government.

According to "The Standard", President Adama Barrow spoke at length about the return of the former dictator while receiving visitors from Foni in his hometown of Mankamang Kunda.

"If he had truly wanted to return to Gambia, he would have done so for his mother's funeral."

The State House occupant reportedly stated that he didn't really believe the announcement. "If he had truly wanted to return to The Gambia, he would have done so for his mother's funeral. In any case, Banjul International Airport is open," Adama Barrow asserted, adding that no one had expelled the former leader from Banjul.

“Jammeh has exiled himself. No one expelled him from The Gambia. He can never be president of this country again. His only title is that of ‘former president’ and whether he accepts it or not, that is how he will be called,” the head of state declared.

It should be noted that Jammeh still enjoys popular support in Foni Kanilai, his hometown. President Barrow believes the people are loyal to him because he is a son of the region. However, he emphasized that his government has done far more for Foni Kanilai than Jammeh did in his 22 years in power.
