Alerte rouge sur la sardinelle : Quatre pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest s’accordent sur des mesures-choc
The sardinella (commonly called "yaboye" in Wolof), this staple fish essential for the preparation of Senegal's national dish "Thiébou Dieune" (fish rice), is threatened with extinction due to industrial overfishing, increasing demand from fishmeal factories and climate change.
Meeting in Dakar this Thursday, experts and decision-makers from Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau acknowledged the urgent need to implement a range of measures. The objective is to save sardine stocks, a cornerstone of regional food security, which are currently on the verge of collapse.
The time for mere warnings is over; now is the time for action, they agreed. For the sardinella, this "poor man's fish" that feeds millions of households in West Africa, is disappearing. Faced with this alarming situation, the "research and management" working group of the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) has decided on radical measures, the most urgent of which is the establishment of a strict and coordinated biological rest period.
For Matthieu Bernardon, an expert at the FAO, the idea is simple: "Stop fishing for a while" in order to give the fish time to reproduce.
According to him, "everyone agrees on the period which corresponds between September and October in Mauritania, and May-June-July for Senegal, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. These measures must be implemented as soon as possible," he stressed, as reported by Aps.sn.
In addition to the biological rest period, scientists are calling for a revision of the catch standards. The minimum catch size should be set at 18 cm. Fish smaller than this are considered juveniles.
The expert also recommends banning the use of whole, fresh sardinellas for the production of fishmeal and fish oil, in order to prioritize human consumption.
The fishing shutdown has significant consequences. For the millions of people who depend on this sector, particularly women processors and artisanal fishermen, these months of inactivity will be difficult.
Thus, several solutions were discussed by experts who advocated redirecting subsidies towards direct aid, creating relief funds and mutuals, and supporting the diversification of economic activities.
