Après le Mali, le Burkina Faso aussi interdit l'entrée aux Américains par réciprocité
Americans will no longer be able to enter Burkina Faso and Mali: these two Sahelian countries have announced they will respond "reciprocally" to the measures taken by Washington which recently placed them on a list of nations whose nationals are banned from obtaining visas for the United States.
Since returning to power in January, Donald Trump has waged a vast campaign against illegal immigration and has considerably tightened the conditions for entry into the United States and the granting of visas, arguing for the protection of national security.
On December 16, the US administration announced it was expanding the list of nationalities banned from visas - which already included twelve countries - to include Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, Laos, Syria and Sierra Leone, as well as Palestinian nationals, to "protect the security of the United States".
Burkina Faso and Mali responded in two separate statements consulted by AFP on Wednesday.
"In accordance with the principle of reciprocity, the government of Burkina Faso informs national and international opinion of its decision to apply equivalent visa measures to nationals of the United States of America," declares the Burkinabe Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On the Bamako side, the authorities indicate that they are "applying, as a reciprocal measure and with immediate effect, to American nationals, the same conditions and requirements as those imposed by the American authorities on Malian citizens".
The Malian government also "regrets" "that a decision of such importance was taken without any prior consultation".
The two Sahelian countries, ruled by military juntas, are allied in a confederation that also includes Niger.
They advocate a sovereignist and anti-imperialist policy, but have maintained generally cordial relations with the United States.
No official communication has yet come from Niger on the subject of visas, but last week the Nigerien Press Agency reported a similar measure, citing a diplomatic source.
- Exceptions -
The measures taken by Washington aim to prohibit entry into the United States to foreigners who "intend to threaten" Americans or those who "could harm the culture, government, institutions or founding principles" of the United States, according to the White House.
The measure does, however, provide exceptions for legal permanent residents, existing visa holders, certain categories of visas such as those issued to athletes and diplomats, and for people whose "entry serves the national interests of the United States."
Twelve other countries have been affected by these restrictions since June, mainly in Africa and the Middle East: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
In October, Burkina Faso announced it would refuse to accept people deported from the United States to third countries, another key measure of President Trump's anti-immigration policy.
The Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, had then described this proposal from Washington as "indecent".
