Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah has responded to speculation surrounding the possible candidacy of Head of State General Mamadi Doumbouya in the upcoming presidential election. In an interview with France 24, he stated that the transitional president could, like any other citizen, seek the votes of Guineans.
Asked about the matter, the head of government responded bluntly: "Let's leave it to him, like other citizens of the Republic of Guinea, to run for office. For the moment, this issue is not on the agenda." For Amadou Oury Bah, the immediate issue lies elsewhere: "The question that is on the agenda is: yes or no, do we want a constitution that unites the people of Guinea, that responds to deep aspirations, that promotes legality and cohesion, and that strengthens the integration of all communities into the melting pot of the Republic."
Jabs at opponents
In the same interview, the Prime Minister criticized the regime's political opponents, saying they should be more clear-headed:
"In my opinion, those who have assumed responsibilities would have deserved greater attention and greater humility to realize that Guinea is taking a qualitative step towards consolidating the fundamentals of the State and democratic society," he said, against the backdrop of a giant poster of General Doumbouya.
This statement comes just days before the constitutional referendum scheduled for September 21, a vote which is already crystallizing tensions and divergences within the Guinean political class.
