Baisse généralisée des niveaux d’eau dans le bassin du fleuve Gambie, sauf à Kédougou où une légère hausse est enregistrée

The hydrological situation observed this Friday, October 10, 2025, reveals a general downward trend in water levels at the majority of stations monitored in the Gambia River basin. Only the Kédougou station shows a slight rise in water levels, a sign of local variation in rainfall in the area.

Tributaries in significant decline

The tributaries of the Gambia River continue to recede.

  1. In Diaguiri, the water level fell from 2.97 m to 2.86 m, a drop of 11 cm in 24 hours. At the same time in 2024, the level was 6.09 m, a significant decline compared to last year.
  2. At Afia Pont (Thiokoye), the trend is even more marked: the level fell from 3.17 m to 2.41 m, a drop of 76 cm in one day. In 2024, the height reached 5.73 m.
  3. At Niokolo Koba, the drop is slight but continuous, with a level of 5.48 m compared to 5.50 m the day before. The difference remains significant, however, compared to last year, when the river peaked at 8.62 m.
  4. At the Sinthiou Malème, Goumbayel and Diahra Pont stations, water levels remain too low to reach the measuring scale.

The Gambia River: slight rise in Kédougou, stability in Mako, decline elsewhere

  1. In Kédougou, a rise of 10 cm was recorded: the level rose from 3.78 m to 3.88 m this morning. Despite this slight increase, the river remains well below the alert level of 7 meters. At the same time last year, it reached 7.50 m.
  2. In Mako, the water level is almost stable, falling from 3.58 m to 3.57 m (a drop of 1 cm). Here again, the situation is significantly lower than that of October 10, 2024, when the level was 5.33 m, for an alert level set at 6 m.
  3. In Simenti, the day's data have not yet been transmitted. However, the last measurement on October 9, 2025, indicated a level of 7.17 m, far from the alert level of 13 m. In 2024, the river peaked at 12.50 m.
  4. Finally, in Gouloumbou, a notable drop of 18 cm was observed: 9.67 m this morning compared to 9.85 m the day before. The river remains below the alert level set at 12 m, with a significant difference compared to the 11.92 m recorded on the same date in 2024.

A rainy season at the end of the cycle

These variations confirm the trend of gradual decline observed since the beginning of October, marking the end of the rainy season in the upper basin of the Gambia River. Experts from the Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade, however, recommend continued monitoring of levels, particularly in Kédougou where a localized resumption of runoff remains possible.

The hydrological situation on 10 October 2025 remains generally under control, with levels lower than those observed the previous year, reflecting a progressive weakening of water supplies in the Gambia River basin.
