Bassin du fleuve Gambie : hausse et baisse contrastées des niveaux d’eau aux différentes stations
The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its hydrological bulletin this Friday on the evolution of water levels in the Gambia River and its tributaries. Measurements taken at 8 a.m. reveal contrasting trends at different stations, ranging from notable increases to worrying decreases.
Tributaries in disparate evolution
• Diaguiri (upstream of Mako): the level rose to 3.54 m compared to 3.39 m the day before, an increase of 15 cm. However, it remains well below the 6 m recorded at the same time in 2024.
• Afia Pont (Thiokoye): the day's data was not transmitted, but yesterday the level was 2.10 m, far from the 5.74 m observed in 2024.
• Diahra Pont: a rating of 1.54 m was recorded, with no possible comparison with 2024 due to lack of available data.
• Goumbayel: slight drop to 2.03 m against 2.05 m yesterday, or –2 cm.
• Niokolo Koba: no reading this morning, but the level was 6.10 m on September 11, down from 7.84 m last year.
• Sinthiou Malème: the water level no longer reaches the scale.
The Gambia River under surveillance
• Kédougou: the level is 5.34 m, up 15 cm compared to the previous day (5.19 m). However, it remains lower than the 7.28 m recorded on the same date in 2024. The alert level for this station is set at 7 m.
• Mako: the waters are receding, going from 4.50 m yesterday to 4.33 m this morning (–17 cm). In 2024, the level reached 5.76 m. The alert level there is 6 m.
• Simenti: No readings available this morning, as yesterday. For comparison, the river was at 10.13 m on September 12, 2024. The alert level is set at 13 m.
• Gouloumbou: a sharp rise of 24 cm, with the level reaching 8.13 m compared to 7.89 m yesterday. Last year, it was 7.56 m at the same time.
Maintained vigilance
These variations reflect a heterogeneous hydrological situation in the Gambia River basin. While some stations are recording encouraging increases, others are revealing levels significantly lower than last year. Authorities are calling for increased vigilance, particularly in Kédougou and Gouloumbou, where levels are approaching alert levels.
