Bassin du fleuve Gambie : un niveau d’eau en hausse à Kédougou, mais toujours en dessous du seuil d’alerte
The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its hydrological bulletin on the situation of the Gambia River and its tributaries on Monday, September 29, 2025. Readings taken at 8 a.m. show a contrasting trend in water levels across stations, with notable increases in some locations and decreases in others. Overall, levels remain lower than those observed at the same time last year.
A notable increase among affluents
At the Diaguiri station, the water level reached 3.63 meters, an increase of 37 cm compared to the previous day (3.26 m). However, this level remains significantly lower than that recorded on September 29, 2024, which was 5.32 m.
The same trend was observed at Afia Pont (Thiokoye), where an increase of 81 cm was observed in 24 hours, bringing the level to 3.74 m. Here again, this is far from the 5.71 m of last year at the same date.
On the other hand, in Niokolo Koba, a slight drop of 3 cm was recorded, with a level of 5.67 m compared to 5.70 m the previous day. Comparatively, the level there was much higher in 2024, reaching 8.36 m.
The Goumbayel and Sinthiou Malème stations did not provide usable measurements, as their levels did not reach the scale.
The Gambia River under surveillance
In Kédougou, the river has risen by 27 cm in 24 hours, from 5.24 m to 5.51 m. While this figure remains below the 6.81 m recorded in 2024, it should be remembered that the alert level is set at 7 meters.
In Mako, the trend is reversed: the level has fallen by 21 cm, reaching 4.43 m compared to 4.64 m the previous day. In 2024, it reached 5.38 m at the same time. The alert level there is 6 meters.
In Simenti, no readings were reported for September 29, but the previous day's measurement indicated 8.82 meters, a far cry from the 12.58 meters recorded last year. The alert level in this area is 13 meters.
Finally, in Gouloumbou, the water level remained stationary at 9.73 m. Although relatively high, it remains below the alert threshold set at 12 m and the level of 10.82 m observed in 2024.
A situation generally under control but to be monitored
These data show that, despite occasional increases, water levels in the Gambia River basin remain below alert levels, which currently rules out any imminent risk of flooding. However, experts from the Water Resources Brigade are calling for continued vigilance, due to the rapidly changing hydrological conditions at this time of year.
