Bénin : 6 députés claquent la porte du parti d’opposition Les Démocrates, écarté de la Présidentielle de 2026
In Benin, bad news continues to pile up for the opposition party Les Démocrates. After failing to have the candidacy of its two candidates for the April 2026 presidential election validated, the political party has just recorded the resignation of 6 of its members of parliament.
These elected officials announced their departure from the party this Friday, October 31, 2025, on the sidelines of the opening of the second ordinary session of the National Assembly for the year 2025.
Michel Sodjinou among those who resigned
They justify their decision with personal and political reasons. Joel Godonou, Chantal Adjovi, Constant Nahum, Denise Hounmènou, and Régo Léansou say they are leaving for personal reasons. Only MP Michel Sodjinou mentioned political reasons.
It was this elected official who took responsibility for excluding his party from the 2026 presidential race by refusing to grant his endorsement to the Agbodjo-Lodjou duo of candidates.
A constitutional revision has been announced.
Those who resigned have not yet chosen a destination. They declare themselves non-registered, for the time being.
Following the defection of these MPs, pro-government media outlets are announcing a constitutional revision. Indeed, according to the newspaper Le Matinal, a bill proposing a revision of the fundamental law has been signed by MPs Aké Natondé and Assan Seibou.
