Bénin : L’ambassadeur russe évoque le putsch manqué et les relations difficiles entre Niamey et Cotonou
The Russian ambassador to Benin and Togo, Igor Evdokimov, recently gave an interview to the TASS news agency. Several topics were discussed with the diplomat, including the failed coup in Benin. According to the Russian official, these events have caused considerable concern in Moscow.
“We have followed with concern the events of December 7 in Benin, a friendly country. We are convinced that the rapid neutralization of the attempted military rebellion is the result of the consistent policy pursued by the Beninese authorities to strengthen national sovereignty and defense capabilities. Cotonou’s close cooperation with its partners in the West African sub-region, particularly Nigeria, also played a decisive role,” said Mr. Evdokimov.
Facilitating the resumption of dialogue between ECOWAS and the ESA
He reiterated that his country has always wanted West Africa to remain an area of peace and stability. This is also why Moscow welcomes the "trend towards increased cooperation currently observed within ECOWAS."
The diplomat also indicated that Russia was willing to facilitate the resumption of dialogue between the community organization and the ESA, because "the current divisions do not promote either mutual trust or the development of cooperation between these associations."
Moscow ready to mediate between Benin and Niger
Regarding the tensions between Benin and Niger more specifically, Mr. Evdokimov indicated that Moscow was ready to engage in "appropriate mediation, including bilateral mediation," to normalize relations between the two neighboring countries while ensuring full respect for the interests of both parties involved.
