Burkina Faso : Amnesty se dit "alarmée et profondément préoccupée" par une loi pénalisant l'homosexualité

The NGO Amnesty International said it was "alarmed and deeply concerned" by the criminalization of consensual sexual relations between adults of the same sex in Burkina Faso, in a statement published on Tuesday.

Burkina Faso is ruled by a sovereignist junta hostile to the West, headed by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who has been in power since a coup in September 2022.

On Monday, the Transitional Legislative Assembly adopted a law providing for sentences of up to five years in prison for "perpetrators of homosexual practices."

"We are alarmed and deeply concerned by the criminalization of same-sex relationships between adults," the NGO reacted the day after the adoption of this law.

There is no law specifically targeting homosexuals in Burkina Faso, who nevertheless live discreetly in this West African country.

"This only creates discrimination and violates the right to equality before the law," Amnesty added.

The NGO calls on Captain Traoré to return the text "to the Transitional Legislative Assembly for revision before promulgating it."

Amnesty International also states that this law is "contrary to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both ratified by Burkina Faso."

Since Captain Traoré took office, Burkina Faso has turned its back on several Western partners, led by France, to move closer to Russia and Iran in particular.

Same-sex relations are illegal in a third of the world's countries and in some of them can be punishable by imprisonment or even the death penalty.

In Africa, a majority of countries have laws that prohibit and punish homosexuality: this is the case in around thirty out of 54 states.
