Burkina: enquête après l'assassinat d'une ancienne ministre et proche de l'ex-président Compaoré
The Ouagadougou prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to "find the perpetrators and possible accomplices" of the assassination of a former minister and close associate of ex-president Blaise Compaoré, it was learned Tuesday.
On January 10, the lifeless body of Yolande Viviane Compaoré was "discovered in a house" in a working-class neighborhood of Ouagadougou, the Ouagadougou High Court prosecutor's office said in a statement.
"The initial evidence gathered at the crime scene reveals that the victim was attacked and murdered at her home," said Burkina Faso prosecutor Lafama Prosper Thiombiano.
"An investigation was immediately opened to find the perpetrators and possible accomplices of this crime," he added, specifying that an appeal for witnesses had been launched.
Former governor of the Northern region and deputy of the Congress for Democracy and Progress (CDP, former ruling party), Viviane Yolande Compaoré has held several government positions.
She notably served as Minister of Transport and Tourism, then as Minister of Regional Integration, in the late 1990s.
An influential figure in Burkinabe political life under Blaise Compaoré (1987-2014), she also chaired the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the National Assembly and led the Network of Women Parliamentarians of the Francophonie.
Blaise Compaoré left power in Burkina Faso after being ousted by a popular uprising and now lives in Ivory Coast.
The country has been ruled since the end of 2022 by a military junta headed by Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
