Burkina Faso : Le nombre de jours chômés et payés passe de 15 à 11
The Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) unanimously adopted a new law on January 9, 2026, concerning paid holidays, commemorative days, and days of remembrance. This law, which repeals the November 2015 law, introduces major reforms to the organization of public holidays.
The law notably eliminates the principle of automatically postponing a public holiday that falls on a Sunday.
Furthermore, May 15, dedicated to customs and traditions, is now recognized as a paid holiday, in a clear effort to strengthen the secular nature of the State.
In total, the number of paid days off is reduced from 15 to 11, a measure that should allow the State to save nearly 16.88 billion CFA francs.
According to the government, this reform aims to increase working hours, ensure the continuity of public services and improve the efficiency of the Administration, in a context of rationalizing public holidays and asserting national sovereignty.
