Burkina : grâce présidentielle accordée à 963 détenus
The Burkinabe president granted sentence reductions to 963 prisoners on the occasion of January 1, 2026, in application of the constitutional right of pardon, the Council of Ministers announced.
The presidential decree granting clemency to 963 prisoners, adopted in the Council of Ministers, is based on Article 54 of the Constitution of June 2, 1991, which confers upon the Head of State a right of pardon, made applicable by Law No. 010-2017/AN of April 10, 2017, concerning the penitentiary regime in Burkina Faso.
The measures concern prisoners sentenced to prison terms whose judgments have become final. Thus, 372 prisoners benefit from a full remission of the remainder of their sentences, 590 others from a partial remission ranging from 3 to 12 months, and one prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment has his sentence commuted.
The beneficiaries were selected according to several criteria: age, being a minor, poor health, or involvement in work within agricultural production units, workshops, and community projects. Particular attention was paid to convicts who had requested the commutation of their sentence to community service.
According to the government, these measures of clemency are part of a humanitarian approach aimed at offering a second chance to people who have shown tangible efforts towards rehabilitation.
The full list of the 963 beneficiaries will be published shortly in the Official Journal of Burkina Faso.
