It's an open secret. Thomas Sankara is a major figure of Pan-Africanism in Africa. Assassinated in 1987 during a military coup, the man many called the "African Che Guevara" has never truly disappeared from the collective memory of Burkinabé and Africans.

Thirty-eight years after his death, we continue to discover new facets of him, anecdotes about him.

"I was there and my car disappeared before my eyes."

In an opinion piece published on Lefaso.net, Jonas Hien, a man close to Joseph Sankara (Thomas's father), revealed a confidence Sankara had shared with him about his son. This story is linked to the current Congolese leader, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

“The President of the Republic of Congo, a friend of his, gave me a vehicle. The vehicle registration documents are in my name. He informed Thomas before handing over the vehicle to me. Around the same time, I had just bought this moped (he showed me the motorcycle, which was a Honda Econo Power). As soon as his friend left Burkina Faso, Thomas returned here with his soldiers and ordered the car to be taken to the state vehicle depot. I was there, and my car disappeared before my very eyes,” Joseph Sankara recounted.

"Instead of taking care of the state that needs it, we take care of those who have new mopeds."

His son then looked at him and said, "You're better off, you just bought a new moped. The state has nothing. Instead of taking care of the state that needs it, we take care of those who have new mopeds."

Joseph said he pretended to ignore him. “I acted as if he wasn’t talking to me! But since we couldn’t discuss it, he went back outside and disappeared too, just like my car (Old Sankara laughs). As I speak to you now (it was 1999), I don’t know what became of that vehicle. I spoke to Blaise about it, but it didn’t change anything. I still have the vehicle’s papers with me,” recounted the father of the former Burkinabe leader.

This story, revealed by Jonas Hien, shows that Thomas Sankara put the interests of the nation above those of his own family.
