Conakry : Libération "imminente" incertaine pour Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, dont le procès s’ouvre ce jeudi
The appeal trial of former Prime Minister Ibrahima Kassory Fofana opens this Thursday, March 5, 2026, before the Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offenses (CRIEF). While rumors circulate about an "imminent" release, his entourage insists that no official confirmation has been given.
“We heard he might be released, but we can’t confirm anything. His health remains the top priority. Dr. Ibrahima Kassory Fofana requires medical evacuation. He is suffering greatly,” said a close associate of the former Prime Minister, emphasizing the medical urgency of the situation. His lawyers also preferred not to speculate on a possible favorable decision.
Deprived of his liberty since April 2022, the former Prime Minister was found guilty of embezzlement of public funds, illicit enrichment, and money laundering in the first instance. In February 2025, the CRIEF (Special Court for Economic and Financial Crimes) sentenced him to five years in prison.
According to those close to him, even if a release decision were announced today, it wouldn't necessarily be a priority given his critical condition. "What matters most is that he receives a rapid medical evacuation. Bringing a sick man home without proper treatment wouldn't solve anything," our source added.
The long-delayed appeal trial should now be examined by the CRIEF appeals chamber in the coming hours, leaving the national community and observers to wait attentively for developments in this case.
