Conakry submergée par le plastique : Un jeune entrepreneur transforme les déchets en richesse

In Conakry, plastic waste is invading streets, gutters, and the coastline. Guinea produces over 480,000 tons of plastic each year, much of which ends up in the environment. In the capital, more than 1,200 tons of garbage are generated daily, exacerbating unsanitary conditions and flooding, particularly during the rainy season.

Faced with this environmental emergency, local initiatives are trying to change things. Among them is that of Fodé Camara, a young entrepreneur who has decided to turn a scourge into an opportunity.

A vocation born from an alarming observation

It was in Siguiri that Fodé Camara became aware of the scale of plastic pollution. Struck by the accumulation of bags abandoned in nature, he imagined a simple solution: collect them and give them a second life.

Now based in Sanoyah, on the outskirts of Conakry, he founded Managnouma SARL, a small recycling unit specializing in the manufacture of reusable bags from plastic waste.

In his modest workshop, equipped with rudimentary means, he transforms used bags into strong, colorful and waterproof bags. "I wanted to create an activity that generates income while being useful to society," he explains.

Supported by his sister, a Peace Corps volunteer, he abandoned his migration plans to dedicate himself to local entrepreneurship.

From waste to finished product

The manufacturing process relies on several rigorous steps: collection, sorting, disinfection, washing, drying, and then assembly. Fodé Camara relies on an informal network of collectors, including children, whom he pays 1,000 GNF per kilogram of bags.

Each bag requires between 80 and 280 sachets, depending on its size. Entirely handmade, the products are made in about thirty minutes. They are then sold for between 25,000 and 50,000 GNF.

A high-impact activity, but under constraints

Despite encouraging results, the company continues to face numerous challenges. A lack of funding, modern equipment, and institutional support significantly limits its production capacity, estimated at around 30 bags per day.

"My ambition is to train other young people and develop a real industrial unit," says the entrepreneur, who has bigger plans for his project.

Delighted customers

Managnouma's products appeal to a clientele increasingly sensitive to environmental issues. Resistant and waterproof, these bags meet everyday needs while contributing to waste reduction.

"It's a very good quality bag. Even in the rain, my belongings stay dry," testifies Elhadj Almamy Sangaré, a teacher.

Guilavogui Élisabeth Zézé, a loyal user, agrees: "Mine, bought two years ago, is still in good condition. It's practical, durable and ecological."

A local economic lever

Beyond its environmental impact, this activity generates local economic activity. Waste collection becomes a source of income for several stakeholders.

In Cosa, restaurant owner Kadiatou Bah observes a notable change: "Before, we paid to get rid of the waste. Now, it's bought. That's an advantage for us."

A solution that is still insufficient

Experts say these initiatives remain essential but are not enough on their own to resolve the crisis.

Mohamed Lamine Barry, an environmental assessment consultant, warns: "Recycling is important, but it must be part of a comprehensive strategy that includes source reduction and reuse."

He also highlights the risks associated with poor recycling management, both in terms of health and the environment.

A collective fight to be waged

While authorities are stepping up their efforts against single-use plastics, citizen involvement remains crucial. Raising awareness, adopting eco-friendly alternatives, and structuring the recycling sector are all avenues that need strengthening.

Transforming hope into a sustainable solution

Fodé Camara's initiative illustrates the capacity for local innovation in the face of major challenges. Combining ecological commitment and entrepreneurial resourcefulness, it embodies a glimmer of hope in a worrying context.

But to scale up, these efforts will need to be accompanied by ambitious public policies and genuine support for those working on the ground.
