The wife of ousted Guinea-Bissau president Umaro Sissoco Embalo, Dinisia Reis, has been charged in Portugal as part of an investigation into suspected smuggling and money laundering, the Portuguese judicial police (PJ) announced on Tuesday.
Dinisia Reis Embalo landed in Lisbon this weekend on the same flight from Guinea-Bissau as another passenger arrested on Sunday by Portuguese authorities upon arrival following an anonymous tip.
The latter, who was carrying nearly five million euros in cash, is suspected of "smuggling and money laundering", police said in a statement Sunday.
The indictment of Ms. Embalo "is linked to this case," a police spokesperson told AFP, without providing further details.
The Portuguese police explained that the flight from Guinea-Bissau, initially declared to be of a military nature, was to continue to the city of Beja, in the south of the country, after a stopover in Lisbon.
However, it was subsequently established that the final destination did not correspond to the information provided to the aviation authorities.
According to local media, the man arrested, who has since been released after appearing before a judge, is Tito Fernandes, a close associate of Umaro Sissoco Embalo.
Guinea-Bissau was the scene of a military coup in late November, the day before the scheduled announcement of the provisional results of the presidential and legislative elections held on November 23.
Both the camp of the outgoing president and that of the opposition candidate Fernando Dias de Costa claimed victory.
The military had announced that they had taken "total control of the country", arrested the outgoing president and suspended the electoral process.
Located between Senegal and Guinea (Conakry), Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony, had already experienced four coups and a host of attempted coups since its independence in 1974.
In this context, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) chose East Timor to temporarily assume the presidency of the organization, which had previously belonged to Guinea-Bissau. The CPLP also suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its activities at an extraordinary summit held Tuesday in Cape Verde, according to the Lusa news agency.
Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel indicated on Tuesday that he was in contact with the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to demand a "return to constitutional order".

* au singulier ..
