Côte d’Ivoire : Tidjane Thiam réagit à la candidature de Ouattara pour un 4e mandat
At the end of July, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara announced his candidacy for a fourth term . The leader justified his decision by the need to preserve national stability in the face of "unprecedented security, economic, and monetary challenges."
This announcement comes at a time of political uncertainty for the opposition. Its key figures, including Laurent Gbagbo, Guillaume Soro, Charles Blé Goudé, and Tidjane Thiam, have been removed from the electoral roll and will therefore be unable to participate in the October 25 presidential election.
A “4th unconstitutional mandate”
In a recent interview with the YouTube channel "Décrypter l'Afrique," the president of the PDCI-RDA called on the Ivorian leader to open up the political game.
"If Mr. Ouattara is a candidate for a fourth term , which we consider unconstitutional, he should open the doors wide and let everyone run, so that Côte d'Ivoire finally has the opportunity to have a peaceful election where every Ivorian can, according to their conscience or their convictions, choose the candidate they wish to see lead the country," urged Tidjane Thiam.
"I fear that stability will lead to instability."
The former international banker then dismissed the arguments put forward by Ouattara to justify his candidacy.
"We all have the impression that continuity and stability are synonymous. There are cases where this is not true, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire. I fear that stability leads to instability. I have said that Côte d'Ivoire's enemies want there to be a disastrous election and a poorly elected president. When people want to destabilize a country, they prefer there to be an aging, worn-out government, not very supported by the population, because that is when the opportunities to create problems are greatest," believes the leader of the PDCI-RDA.
He therefore refutes the idea that a 4th term could ensure the stability of the country, as Alassane Ouattara defends.
"The real guarantee of stability is that the election result reflects the will of the Ivorians," he assures.
