De la ruse pour déstabiliser le parti d'opposition Les Démocrates ? : Les révélations de l’ancien Président béninois Boni Yayi
In a video posted on YouTube midweek, former Beninese President Thomas Boni Yayi denounced attempts to destabilize his opposition party, "Les Démocrates."
The Tchaourou native revealed that one of the vice-presidents of his political party was approached. He was reportedly "proposed not to submit his sponsorship and, subsequently, to resign from his parliamentary duties and be replaced by his deputy."
"The arrangements were made for this," assured the former statesman.
He "felt he could not assume this responsibility"
The MP in question reportedly rejected the proposal, saying he "felt he could not assume the responsibility."
For Boni Yayi, the ruse behind the approach is to prevent his party from going to the 2026 presidential elections.
"Having a substitute replace me would make no sense. No substitute can be installed because we are less than six months away from the end of the parliamentary term. So, a member of parliament who resigns today would be a net loss for the party, for the nation, for the Republic, for the electoral process and our democracy," he explained.
In short, if the opposition MP had agreed to resign, the "Democrats" parliamentary group would have only 27 elected members. However, the Electoral Code requires that the presidential candidate be sponsored by 28 MPs and/or mayors.
