Effondrement d'une mine d'or illégale en Angola, au moins 28 morts

A small artisanal gold mine collapsed in northern Angola over the weekend, killing at least 28 people, nearly half of whom belonged to the same family, according to media and authorities.

Angola possesses rich deposits of diamonds and other minerals, including gold. These resources attract thousands of people, Angolans and nationals of neighboring countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, who dig illegal and uncontrolled mines.

After the mine collapse early Saturday in Bengo province, northeast of Luanda, the Angolan capital, authorities recovered the bodies of 28 people aged 18 to 45, a police spokesman told state broadcaster TPA.

"These young men were extracting strategic minerals, including gold, in this region, and at one point the mine collapsed," he explained on Sunday, adding that authorities were searching for other bodies.

A rescue official gave the same death toll to local media, specifying that 13 of the deceased belonged to the same family.

Authorities in Bengo estimate that some 7,000 illegal miners are extracting gold in the province, according to the official news agency Angop.
