[En route vers la CAN] Maroc-2025 : Hakimi, Kudus, Iliman Ndiaye, Salah… ses stars attendues au sommet
The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off on December 21st in Morocco. Twenty-four nations will be on the starting line, all vying for the prestigious continental trophy. As with every major African football tournament, several stars are expected to shine. Here's a look at five players poised to make their mark on AFCON 2025.
Achraf Hakimi (Morocco)
Achraf Hakimi is coming off an exceptional year at club level, crowned by numerous titles. Considered one of the best right-backs in the world, the Madrid native is playing at the peak of his powers. The 2025 African Footballer of the Year, captain of the Atlas Lions, will have an extra incentive: to shine in front of his home crowd. In an Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Morocco, Hakimi is expected to be the true leader capable of guiding his team to a historic victory.
Iliman Ndiaye (Senegal)
During the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Iliman Ndiaye wasn't yet a guaranteed starter, despite some promising performances. Since then, the Everton striker has clearly taken his game to another level. Now a key player in the Senegalese attack, Iliman Ndiaye will be one of the Lions' most important assets. Technically gifted, quick, and incisive, he possesses that rare ability to turn a match around with a moment of pure skill.
Mohamed Salah (Egypt)
A two-time African Footballer of the Year and Champions League winner, as well as a European champion with Liverpool, Mohamed Salah is still chasing his first continental title with the Pharaohs. This is an anomaly for a player of his caliber. At 33, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations could represent one of his last major opportunities. Drawing on his vast experience, the Liverpool forward will be Egypt's main asset as they aim for an eighth continental title.
Mohammed Kudus (Ghana)
Since 1982, Ghana has been desperately waiting for a fifth star. To end this long drought, the Black Stars will be placing great emphasis on Mohammed Kudus. The Tottenham attacking midfielder arrives in Morocco brimming with confidence. A talented, explosive, and unpredictable left-footer, Kudus is capable of changing the course of a match with a burst of speed or a moment of brilliance. At 25, he seems to have reached his peak and is poised to lead Ghana to the top.
Victor Osimhen (Nigeria)
Winner of the U17 World Cup in 2015, Victor Osimhen made a name for himself early with Nigeria. However, despite being the 2023 African Player of the Year, the striker has yet to win anything with the Super Eagles at the senior level. After Nigeria's World Cup playoff defeat, Osimhen is under pressure to deliver. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations represents an ideal opportunity to guide Nigeria to another continental title.
