Enlèvements au Nigéria : une élève s’échappe, 24 autres toujours retenues
In Nigeria, a schoolgirl escaped the vigilance of her kidnappers and was able to flee a few hours after being abducted.
The events took place in Kebbi State, in the northwest of the country. Twenty-five girls were abducted from the dormitory of the public girls' secondary school where they were staying. Only one managed to escape and return home.
Another student, who was not among the 25 confirmed abductions, also escaped in the minutes following the attack.
Mass kidnappings at schools are not uncommon in northern Nigeria, where dozens of armed gangs operate, composed mainly of nomadic herders and, more recently, jihadists. Analysts say that schools are often targeted by gangs to attract more attention.
Security forces have intensified their efforts to rescue the victims. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings.
Analysts and residents attribute the insecurity to corruption which limits the supply of weapons to the security forces.
