FMI : Cette somme colossale prêtée aux pays africains depuis 2020
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will continue to provide financial assistance to African states. According to a spokesperson for the international financial institution, the demand is there, and it is urgent.
"We are seeing continued demand for IMF support from African countries, including through new programs, extensions, and financing increases, amid persistent shocks and severe debt pressures," the representative told Bloomberg, according to Lusa.
The IMF runs more than 20 financial adjustment programs in Africa
The man specifies that his institution has already financed African economies to the tune of nearly 70 billion dollars (60 million euros) since the start of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020.
The IMF runs more than 20 financial adjustment programs in Africa. Countries such as Malawi, Mozambique, and Kenya have abandoned programs after failing to meet their targets. However, they have not abandoned negotiations with the IMF.
Uganda and Senegal are seeking new programs. Currently, Africa's external debt has exceeded $650 billion. These high debt levels allow foreign investors to impose higher interest rates on loans or debt issues from African countries.
