Gabon: Adieu les patrons étrangers, les banques désormais réservées aux nationaux
Gabon's Council of Ministers has decided: from now on, only Gabonese citizens will be able to run the country's banks, financial institutions, and microfinance institutions. Exceptional exemptions may, however, be granted by the National Council for Savings and Financing (CNEF).
This decision is part of a stated desire to strengthen Gabon's economic sovereignty. By entrusting strategic positions to national executives, the government intends to align financial sector governance with national priorities and reduce the influence of foreign leaders, who have sometimes been singled out for the bad debt crisis.
The stated objective is twofold: to restore user confidence and to assert patriotic control of the financial system.
For the authorities, this measure represents an important lever to stabilize the sector and better control internal economic dynamics.
