Gambie : De vastes champs de cannabis incendiés par la police sur l'île de Jinack

In The Gambia, police intervention units and agents from the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLA) raided Jinack Island on Saturday, February 28th. They set fire to several cannabis fields. This sparked anger among residents, who nevertheless did not attack the police.

It must be said that cannabis cultivation is widely considered an essential source of income in the villages of the island.

They acknowledge that growing cannabis is illegal, but…

Residents perceive the police operation as a severe blow to their livelihoods. For their part, the authorities say they are simply enforcing the law.

It must be said that most of the island's residents acknowledge that cannabis cultivation is illegal. However, they wish to engage in dialogue with the authorities to find alternatives in sectors such as fishing, ecotourism, and agriculture. For them, repression alone will not solve Jinack's economic difficulties.
