Four years after a coup that brought him to power, and despite his initial promise to return it to civilians, Mamadi Doumbouya has consolidated his absolute rule over this West African country amidst shrinking freedoms. Abdoulaye Yéro Baldé, leader of the Democratic Front of Guinea (Frondeg), came in second with 6.59% of the vote.

Participation rate of nearly 81%
Voter turnout reached 80.95%, according to the head of the General Directorate of Elections (DGE), Djénabou Touré, a decrease compared to the figure announced on Sunday when the polls closed. Earlier on Tuesday, four of the eight candidates running against the junta leader conceded defeat and congratulated Mamadi Doumbouya on his first-round victory. The Supreme Court must now announce the final results.
In the streets of Conakry, the announcement of Mr. Doumbouya's election late in the evening did not elicit any particular reaction, AFP journalists observed. Despite his promise to hand power back to civilians after a transitional period, Mr. Doumbouya ran in the election and won without having campaigned and without any significant opposition.
