Guinée : un mort et plusieurs blessés dans des affrontements dans une mine d’or à Siguiri
SIGUIRI – New bloody clashes erupted on the evening of Thursday, January 8, 2026, at the Fadakolon gold mining site in the Siguiri prefecture of Upper Guinea. Two rival groups involved in illegal gold mining clashed violently, leaving one dead and several wounded. The incident sparked significant tension in the area, forcing authorities to deploy security forces to restore order.
A fight that turns into tragedy
According to information gathered by Guineematin.com, it all started when a group of young people went to the site to try to stop the illegal activities of another group of gold miners. This attempt escalated into a violent fight.
"One of the individuals involved was killed at the scene and several others were injured, some seriously," a local source said.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released, but several witnesses report an atmosphere of panic and tension in the gold mining area.
Chinese nationals arrested
As part of the investigation launched after the incident, several Chinese nationals were detained by law enforcement. Local authorities have not yet specified whether these arrests were directly related to the confrontation or to illegal presence at the site.
The Fadakolon gold mine has long been known as a hotbed of anarchic exploitation, where rival groups – often armed – fight for control of gold resources, in a context marked by the presence of foreign investors and local workers.
The prefect of Siguiri reacts
Upon learning of the tragedy, the prefect of Siguiri, Colonel Seni Silver Camara, quickly deployed military and police reinforcements to the area to secure the site and prevent further violence.
“We are taking this situation very seriously. The safety of citizens and workers in this prefecture is a priority. We are doing everything we can to guarantee peace and stability,” the prefect said.
“The young strikers killed the victim”
A local security source confirmed the young man's death during the altercation:
"I received a call from the prefect informing me of a clash between young people. I immediately prepared a team, but upon our arrival, we found that the young strikers had killed the young man," she explains.
Relatives demand justice
The victim died instantly, and his body was transferred to the morgue at the Siguiri prefectural hospital. His shocked relatives are demanding justice.
"This is a tragedy that no one deserves. We hope that those responsible for this violence will be brought to justice," a family member said on condition of anonymity.
A worrying situation in mining areas
This latest tragedy once again highlights the persistent risks and tensions in the country's gold mining areas.
Despite efforts by authorities to regulate the artisanal mining sector, illegal mining and conflicts between rival groups continue to plague several mining communities in Guinea.
