The Koloma neighborhood in the commune of Gbessia is in shock after the death of a five-year-old girl, which occurred a few weeks after a female circumcision. This tragedy, all the more shocking given that this practice is prohibited and criminally punishable in the Republic of Guinea, highlights the persistence of this tradition despite the laws in force. According to initial investigations, the circumcision was carried out by the victim's aunt, Mariam Diallo. Informed of this act, the maternal grandmother, deeply distraught, filed a complaint, leading to the arrest of the suspect on Tuesday, August 18, 2025, at her home by the gendarmerie.
Placed in custody at the Conakry Central Prison, Mariam Diallo is now awaiting a court appearance. An investigation is underway to establish the exact responsibilities and clarify the circumstances of this family tragedy with tragic consequences.
A forbidden but persistent practice
Female genital mutilation is strictly prohibited in Guinea, in accordance with the Penal Code and child protection laws. Yet it remains widespread in many communities, including the capital, Conakry. Family silence, cultural pressures, and a certain social tolerance contribute to the failure to report many cases. This tragedy is a cruel reminder that laws alone are not enough: a collective commitment from families, community leaders, religious authorities, and the state is essential to eradicate this form of genital mutilation.
A warning signal for Guinean society
The death of this little girl goes beyond a legal case; it is a wake-up call for all of Guinean society. It calls for increased vigilance, heightened awareness, and, above all, breaking the silence surrounding female genital mutilation, even when it is perpetrated within the family circle. If children are not safe in their own families, where will they be? Guinea cannot claim real progress as long as little girls continue to lose their lives in indifference, victims of an indefensible tradition.
