« Bas les pattes ! » : Mobilisation tendue à Nairobi contre la présence d'Emmanuel Macron au Kenya
While French President Emmanuel Macron was receiving applause at the Serena Hotel and the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, the streets of Nairobi were speaking a very different language. Around a thousand pan-Africanists from diverse backgrounds marched through the center of the Kenyan capital to demonstrate that Africa has not forgotten its history.
A verdict against imperialism
“Hands off Africa!”, “Macron, French devil—out!”, or even “France out of Africa!”: these slogans resonated like a veritable indictment against the “Africa Forward” summit. Organized by Paris on May 11 and 12 in Nairobi, this summit comes as France seeks new footholds on the continent after being ousted from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
However, this attempt at reconciliation is facing fierce popular resistance. Kenyan police dispersed peaceful protesters using tear gas and gunfire, pushing the marches away from official sites. At least 15 people were arrested during the clashes.
"Repression will not defeat the struggle."
Police repression has not diminished the determination of the opposition. On the social network X, one user addressed the French president directly: “We remind you and your puppet Ruto that repression has never defeated the people’s struggle. Colonial camps did not break the liberation movement. You are not welcome in Kenya, the land of the Mau Mau.”
While Paris presents "Africa Forward" as a "new chapter" in its relations with the continent, pan-African movements see it as colonialism rebranded under a diplomatic guise. For them, the struggle for full sovereignty continues.
