Kaolack : L’adjointe au maire s’exprime après le boycott de Serigne Mboup face aux tensions politiques
Ms. Yaye Astou Sarr, Deputy Mayor of Kaolack, issued a statement this Tuesday to clarify the position of Mr. Serigne Mboup, Mayor of the city and President of the Chamber of Commerce, following his absence during the visit of Minister Biram Soulaye Diop. Arriving accompanied by the Governor, the Minister was welcomed by Ms. Sarr, who made the esplanade in the city center available for the ceremony, demonstrating the Mayor's commitment to his responsibilities. However, tensions led to a decision to withdraw. "Faced with the provocations orchestrated by certain members of PASTEF, with the support of insulters linked to Benno Bokk Yakaar, it was deemed preferable for the Mayor not to attend the event, in order to avoid any unnecessary confrontation," the Deputy Mayor explained.
This decision comes amid growing political pressure following recent incidents denounced by Mboup, including demonstrations outside the town hall and his home.
Ms. Sarr recalled Mboup's exemplary history of welcoming people since 2010, under the presidencies of Abdoulaye Wade, Macky Sall, and now Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko: "He has always given a dignified welcome to all delegations." She reaffirmed the town hall's openness to "supporting any activity of a republican nature," while emphasizing a clear limit: "He will never participate in initiatives used for political ends, likely to turn into confrontation."
This position echoes the mayor's statement last week, in which he denounced a plot aimed at destabilizing the municipal institution.
