Kédougou : Les acteurs se penchent sur l’impact des projets miniers, lors d’un CRD préparatoire aux journées portes ouvertes
Kédougou Governor Mariama Traoré chaired a regional development committee (CRD) meeting on Thursday to review the status of mining projects in the region, ahead of the national open days on the sector. Themed "State of Mining Projects in Kédougou, Outlook, and Socioeconomic and Environmental Impact," the meeting brought together administrative authorities, local elected officials, civil society actors, and mining company executives.
A comprehensive presentation of the current situation
In his presentation, Abou Sow, Director of Energy and Mines, provided a comprehensive overview of the mining situation in the region. "Kédougou is currently at the heart of national mining activity. Several projects are underway, some in the operational phase, others still in development. These initiatives contribute to job creation and infrastructure improvement, but they also pose major challenges in terms of environmental protection and equitable sharing of benefits," he explained.
Concerns of the population, commitment of local authorities
Discussions were particularly lively regarding social and environmental impacts. Mamadou Diallo, a civil society representative, expressed the concerns of local populations. "We are not against mining, but we are demanding more transparency and for communities to truly benefit from the resources of their land. The environmental impact is visible, and sustainable solutions must be found."
For her part, Governor Mariama Traoré was keen to reassure: "The State is attentive to the concerns of the population. These open days will be an opportunity for everyone to ask questions and get clear answers. Our role is to ensure that mining contributes to the development of the region without compromising the future of future generations."
While mining projects open up real prospects in terms of employment and revenue for the national economy, the speakers emphasized the need for a permanent framework for consultation. Ibrahima Diallo, councilor of a mining commune, emphasized: "Local authorities must be more involved. Mining taxes and royalties must be returned in part to the communes to finance local development projects."
This CRD, a preparatory step for the national open days, helped identify key challenges and pave the way for inclusive dialogue. Stakeholders hope that these days will lay the foundations for more responsible and equitable mining.
